This course provides the foundation by which the student will progress to their second clinical affiliation preparing them for hands-on experience in surgical preparation and assistance, anesthesia and dentistry. Topics covered include surgical pre and post op care, instrumentation and equipment, aseptic technique and surgery room conduct, common surgical procedures, pharmacology of anesthesia, anesthesia monitoring, dental abnormalities, dental charting, dental scaling and polishing, and dental radiographs. Ophthalmology tests are performed as well as canine urinary catheterization. Topics around self-care and euthanasia are discussed. The lab provides hands-on practice using models and the animal patient.
